No play was possible on day three of Surrey’s LV= Insurance County Championship match against Essex because of persistent and sometimes heavy rain at the Kia Oval.

Umpires Billy Taylor and Paul Baldwin made their decision at 1.30pm after initially ruling out play before lunch, with the afternoon forecast promising more bad weather.

Surrey will resume their first innings on 107 for 7 tomorrow morning, still 332 runs adrift of Essex’s 439, and the visitors will still be hoping to enforce the follow on and then press for an innings victory.

Essex have already won both their previous Division Two fixtures in the past fortnight, against Glamorgan and Gloucestershire, and are in a good position to finish the season as winners of the new-look championship’s second tier.

Surrey captain Hashim Amla will tomorrow resume his defiant innings on 58 not out, partnered by James Taylor on 2, and with the weather forecast a good one throughout Wednesday.
