Smith first wore the club’s famous 3 feathers at an under-9 level, the whitgift school student has impressed as he rose through the age groups.
Despite missing the second half of the 2017 campaign through injury, the youngster caught the attention of the coaching staff to such an extent that when it became apparent Ben Foakes and Ollie Pope were going to be unavailable for the pre-season tour of Dubai, Smith was called up to be the chief gloveman. His time with the 2nd XI at the start of the 2018 season was disrupted by A Level exams but once that was completed, Smith fired with bat in hand during the T20 block of 2nd XI cricket.
He made his senior debut at Lord’s in the Vitality Blast London Derby. His first-class debut came in the Champion County match in Dubai, where he scored an assured century against The MCC’s an all-star attack before List A appearances followed in the Royal London One-Day Cup. 2020 saw him become a consistent member of both the Bob Willis Trophy & Vitality Blast team.
Smith had something of a breakthrough season in 2021, playing as a near ever-present across all three formats in county cricket and even captaining the side in the Royal London Cup.
