Jamie Overton scored 70 not out on the first day of Surrey’s pre-season match with Sussex at Hove

Surrey’s preparations for the 2024 season stepped today with the first day of our pre-season friendly with Sussex. The toss was uncontested, with Surrey batting first.

Rory Burns and Dom Sibley opened the batting on a cold morning by the coast.

Burns was caught behind by new Sussex captain John Simpson for 2 off the bowling of Sean Hunt. Sibley was next to depart, as was caught on the leg side by Hudson-Prentice off the bowling of Ari Karvelas for 20 to leave Surrey 25/2.

Ryan Patel was next to depart, as he top-edged a pull shot off Henry Crocombe to the waiting hands of Oli Carter with the score on 42.

Jordan Clark joined Jamie Smith and the pair looked to score from the off. Smith continued where he left off in 2023, striking nine boundaries on his way to 51.

Clark was caught behind off the bowling of Hudson-Prentice for 29. Smith departed an over later for 51 from 45 balls, leaving Surrey 110/5.

Cam Steel and Jamie Overton came together and looked to score before Steel was trapped lbw to Danny Lamb for 16. All-rounder Tom Lawes joined Overton, with the latter looking to score in his usual-aggressive way.

Jamie Overton smashed three sixes and eight fours on his way to 70 not out – looking at his aggressive best.

Tom Lawes was bowled by Cole for a steady 25 with Surrey on 221 to end the Surrey innings.

With the ball, Dan Worrall made the breakthrough as Tom Haines was caught in the leg side for 6 to leave the hosts 15/1.

Tom Alsop joined Tom Clark and the pair batted out the remaining 15 overs of the day. Bad light stopped play with Sussex 60/1 – with Tom Clark 40 not out and Tom Alsop 12 not out.
