Derbyshire trail Surrey by 22 runs, with six wickets in hand, after a fast-moving first day of the Second XI Championship fixture at LSE New Malden.
The morning started with Ollie Sykes winning the toss and deciding to bat. Surrey were quickly put under a mountain of pressure as the visitors began sharply.
Haydon removed both the openers, Josh Blake (1) and Adam Thomas (7), and his new ball partner, Potts had Sykes caught in the cover region before the hosts reached double figures.
Nikhil Gorantla (41) and Ollie Hunt (19) battled hard to steady the ship with their 42-run stand for the fourth wicket but Derbyshire ended the morning session in the same fashion as they kickstarted it.
Seamer Stewart broke the burgeoning alliance by getting Hunt strangled down the leg before Potts bounced out Nathan Farmer (7) and James Taylor (0), with Surrey going into the lunch interval on 71/6.
Gorantla’s resistance ended early in the afternoon session when Stewart pinned him LBW with a yorker. Yousef Majid (19) stuck around for 48 balls and took his side closer to 120 with James Taylor, before he holed out to mid-wicket and became Potts’ fourth victim.
That brought Matt Dunn to the middle alongside Taylor, and the two pacers played aggressively for an entertaining 59-run partnership. Dunn’s knock of 30 included four boundaries, and Barnwell smashed 44 of his unbeaten 50 runs in boundaries.
Karim got the breakthrough for Derbyshire before dismissing Luke Griffiths (4) as well and wrapping up Surrey’s first innings for 183.
After the innings break, Surrey picked up the early breakthrough that they would have wanted, Dunn finding a feather of Tarrant’s bat, which was well held in the slips by Sykes.
It was smooth sailing for the visitors from there on, Wagstaff (58) and Basra (75*) showing great concentration and adding 113 runs for the second wicket, until Majid struck twice in an over to bring Surrey back in the game.
He pinned the left-hander Wagstaff LBW from around the wicket with a beautiful delivery before also trapping Bin Naeem (4) leg before the wicket on the final ball of the 29th over.
Barnwell collected a fourth wicket for the hosts as Derbyshire skipper holed out to deep square leg for nine. After 41 overs of their innings, the visitors ended the first day on 161/4, behind by 22 runs.
