Despite missing the second half of the 2017 campaign through injury, the youngster caught the attention of the coaching staff to such an extent that when it became apparent Ben Foakes and Ollie Pope were going to be unavailable for the pre-season tour of Dubai, Smith was called up to be the chief gloveman.
His time with the 2nd XI at the start of this season has been disrupted by A Level exams but with that now completed for the summer, Smith has fired with bat in hand during the T20 block that’s seen a mix of professionals and youngsters turn out for Surrey.
