Gloucesershire played extraordinary cricket on day four to narrowly pip Surrey by one wicket in the Second XI Championship match at Bristol.

Jared Warner, suitably supported by Luke Charlesworth (34*), spearheaded the hosts’ fightback against the Three Feathers, scoring a wonderful 83 not out and eventually dragging his team to a memorable win.

For Surrey, Amar Virdi was the pick of the bowlers and posted impressive figures of 5/50 from his 19 overs, with Conor McKerr also taking two.

140 runs away from victory, Gloucestershire resumed day four on 137/7 and lost their eighth wicket inside the next four runs as Virdi trapped Zaman Akhter lbw for one.

Ed Middleton was then joined by Warner, and the duo showed admirable determination, adding 36 runs together. But, with the score on 177/8, Virdi completed his five-for and took Surrey within one wicket victory, dismissing Middleton lbw for 15.

However, an exceptional, unbeaten 101-run stand between number 10 Warner and number 11 Luke Charlesworth meant that the final wicket evaded Surrey as they ultimately lost by a wicket.

While Warner – hitting 12 fours – played the role of the aggressor in the partnership, Charlesworth provided him with a helping hand, with both the batters displaying courage and holding their nerves for 140 deliveries as Gloucestershire completed their comeback.
