Surrey’s Pan-Disability First XI have started the defence of their title in strong fashion.

In their first game, they swept aside newly promoted Lancashire. Batting first, Surrey opener Mike O’Mahoney scored a terrific century with 19 fours in his 111. Dan Levey (28), Asif Abbasi (24) and Umar Khan (22*) all chipped in with useful runs as Surrey posted 214-6 in their 32 overs.

In response, Lancashire lost two early wickets before a partnership of 88 between Thomas Meskell and Liam Griffiths threatened to overhaul Surrey’s score. Surrey’s Hayden Bishop (3-36) took three wickets in the middle overs to stifle Lancs who finished on 166-5.

They followed that up with a nine-wicket win over Essex. Bowling first, Surrey openers Jamil Khan (3-17) and Joe Fisher (2-26) blew away the Essex top order. Wickets continued to fall regularly and by the time that Ed Harvey (2-7) cleaned up the tail, Essex were bowled out for 123.

Despite losing James Grindrod early on, Asif Abbasi (79*) and Hayden Bishop (33*) calmly steered Surrey to a comfortable win.

The Pan-disability league includes players with learning difficulties as well as physical disabilities. Surrey’s First XI play in the top division with the Second XI playing in Division Two.

Jonny Gale, Surrey 1st XI Captain, said “We’re looking forward to trying to defend the title we won last year. We’re aiming to build on our performances game by game and hopefully we’ll see some of the lads getting a call up to their respective England squads.”
