With Surrey’s LV= County Championship Division Two campaign set to begin at the end of next month, we take a look at our opponents in the red-ball game.
A fourth placed finish in the ten-match Group 2 earlier in the summer has landed us in the second of three tiers for the final four fixtures of this summer. It has not yet been decided what format the LV= County Championship will take in 2021 so it isn’t expected the final position will affect our future position in the first-class game.

Durham v Surrey, Emirates Riverside, 30th August – 2nd September
Captain: Scott Borthwick
Group Stage finish: 3rd in Group 1
Top run scorer so far: David Bedingham (945 runs @ 72.69)
Top wicket taker so far: Chris Rushworth (46 wickets @ 17.97)
Best performance so far: Defeating Warwickshire by an innings and 127 runs –
Player to look out for: Scott Borthwick – We’ll be up against ‘Badger’ for the first time since he left The Kia Oval at the end of the 2020 season. A much loved figure amongst the Surrey dressing room, there will be plenty of friendly rivalry with none of our team wanting to give our former man an inch.
Northamptonshire v Surrey, County Ground Northampton, 5th – 8th September
Captain: Adam Rossington
Group Stage finish: 4th in Group 3
Top run scorer so far: Ricardo Vasconcelos (716 runs @ 47.73)
Top wicket taker so far: Ben Sanderson (31 wickets @ 30.67)
Best performance so far: Beating Sussex by an innings and 120 runs
Player to look out for: Ben Curran – The brother of Sam & Tom will hopefully be facing off against at least one of his brothers for the first time in professional cricket in this fixture. The opening batter facing the bowling of his siblings sounds well worth a watch to us!
Surrey v Essex, The Kia Oval, 12th – 15th September
Captain: Tom Westley
Group Stage finish: 4th in Group 1
Top run scorer so far: Tom Westley (574 runs @ 41)
Top wicket taker so far: Simon Harmer (39 wickets @ 25.46)
Best performance so far: Beating Derbyshire by an innings and 15 runs
Player to look out for: Sir Alastair Cook – Who else but the legendary batsman? Take every opportunity you can to see him play before his career comes to an end.

Surrey v Glamorgan, The Kia Oval, 21st – 24th September
Captain: Chris Cooke
Group Stage finish: 3rd in Group 3
Top run scorer so far: Kiran Carlson (790 runs @ 65.83)
Top wicket taker so far: Michael Hogan (28 wickets @ 23.64)
Best performance so far: Beating Kent by 10 wickets
Player to look out for: Michael Neser – The Australian seamer signed for Surrey for the 2020 season before the COVID 19 restrictions and curtailed campaign meant he never actually featured for the Club. This will be a good opportunity to see him in action at The Kia Oval, although not in the Three Feathers.
