A look at everything that happened on the first day of play between Surrey and Leicestershire at the Uptonsteel County Ground in the LV= County Championship.

WHAT HAPPENED

Amar Virdi went beyond 100 first-class wickets as Surrey wrestled back in the evening session of the first day of their encounter with Leicestershire at Uptonsteel County Ground. The hosts were 192/1 at tea but ended the day on 306/6 largely thanks to three Virdi wickets.

The off spinner’s key role was in breaking the 195 run partnership between centurions Sam Evans and Marcus Harris, the Australia international, when he removed both in quick succession on 112 and 101 respectively.

That partnership came after an early wicket for Surrey had Leicestershire on 13/1. Left arm seamer Reece Topley forced the edge from Hassan Azad and Ben Foakes completed the job. That was the last wicket for more than 60 overs however with Evans & Harris taking their time over run scoring.

Once Virdi had removed the two key men, Topley and Rikki Clarke soon added to it with the wickets of captain Colin Ackermann (33) and form man Lewis Hill (18). Virdi ended the day by bowling debutant Ed Barnes from around the wicket with a beautifully flighted delivery that clipped the top of the right hander’s off stump.
