Surrey are southbound to Chipstead to play their penultimate London Championship fixture against Kent on Monday (July 17), with hopes of returning back to winning ways.

The London Championship is a round-robin 50-over tournament in which Surrey, Essex, Kent, Middlesex, and Sussex play each other once. Each victory brings 10 points, with batting and bowling bonus points also to be won. The team that finishes on the top of the table after four rounds of matches gets their hands on the trophy.

Having won and lost a game each, Surrey are currently second in the table, behind Essex, with 23 points in the bag.

Surrey name a 12-strong squad for their visit to Chipstead CC.

LAST TIME OUT

Having begun their defence with a convincing 161-run victory over Middlesex, the Three Feathers fell short by 48 runs against Essex in their second game of the campaign.

Electing to bat first at Felsted School, Essex produced an impressive display of batting, finishing on 260/7 from their 50 overs, courtesy of half-centuries from Catherine Dalton (62), Scarlett Hughes (67), and Grace Poole (50 not out). Amy Gordon claimed two for 51 for the visitors, while Charlotte Stubbs, Charlotte Lambert, Laura Bailey, and Daisy Feast were among the wickets as well.

Surrey’s response faltered early doors as they stumbled to 36/4 before Maddie Blinkhorn-Jones (45), with the help of Hannah Burridge (19), began some repair work to take the Three Feathers over a hundred runs. A late charge from Daisy Feast (54) and Bailey (29) took Surrey closer to the target, but Poole’s excellent 5 for 49 ensured Essex were safely home by the end.

LAST TIME VS KENT

The previous time Surrey and Kent took each other on in the London Championship was in 2021 since this fixture was cancelled last year.

In 2021, a rounded performance from the Three Feathers secured a comprehensive 92-run win over Kent at Chipstead CC. Driven by classy fifties Chloe Brewer (62) and Kira Chathli (54) – who received crucial help from Blinkhorn-Jones (39), Gordon (24), and Izzy Berry (20 not out) – Surrey asked their hosts to chase 241 runs from 50 overs.

Leg-spinner Dani Gregory’s exceptional 10-over spell of 4/24 made certain that Kent never found any momentum and were eventually all out for 148. Berry (2/8), Beth Kerins (2/44), and Claudie Cooper (1/23) also played a pivotal part in Surrey’s stellar bowling performance.

KENT

Kent have played two and lost two this season in the London Championship. They sit fourth in the table on nine points, just above Middlesex, having played a game more.

In the opener of their campaign, Kent were handed a 30-run defeat by Essex at Tory Hill. Following that, Sussex followed suit as Kent faced another loss, this time by 35 runs at Sutton Vallence.

Emily Barret, who scored an impressive 74 in the losing cause against Sussex, is Kent’s leading run-getter of the tournament, while South East Stars’ Ryana MacDonald-Gay also notched up a half-century in her only outing this season. Macdonald-Gay and Tilly Corteen Coleman have been the pick of the bowlers for Kent, picking up three wickets each.
