Tommy Ealham has signed a short-term contract with Surrey and will be available for the final two Metro Bank One Day Cup fixtures against Hampshire and Essex.

The 19-year-old off-spinner has played five games for the Surrey Second XI having impressed at U18 level.

Ealham plays for Cranleigh CC having attended Cranleigh School and joined the Surrey Pathway Programme at the U17 age group having previously been part of the Kent Development Programme.

The useful lower-order batter spent the winter in Perth playing for Melville in the Western Australian League.

Ealham’s older brother George was also on the Surrey pathway for a period of time and their father Mark played eight Tests and 64 ODIs for England, having played at Kent for many years and ending his career with Nottinghamshire.

George and Tommy were both Twelths for England during this year’s Ashes Test Match at The Kia Oval, with George nearly completing a famous run out of Steve Smith, only for the umpires to adjudicate that Jonny Bairstow had broken the wickets early.

Chris Taylor, Head of the Surrey Talent Pathway, said: “Tommy has shown what a skilful bowler he is during his time at Surrey. He has an excellent cricket brain and is able to quickly assess the opposition batters and develop plans to try and dismiss them. He’s a very popular member of the set up and we’re delighted that he will get an opportunity to represent the Surrey First XI.”
