After having their opponents 29/6 in their second innings, Surrey will be frustrated to end day two of the fixture facing an uphill battle against Hampshire.

Surrey resumed day two of the Second XI fixture against Hampshire on 45/2. A promising start from Ryan Patel was ended after he dragged on to his own stumps off Holland. Stuart Van der Merwe, the other not out batter overnight added 11 runs before being caught behind off a top edge.

James Taylor (11) was caught at short leg off the bowling of spinner Felix Organ who also claimed the wicket of Academy player Krish Patel who had looked particularly strong off his pads in compiling 31 runs.

Tom Ealham (8) was caught at second slip off the bowling of Burton the very next delivery at the start of a new over. Wicket-keeper Pascall was bowled shortly after, another wicket for Organ. Amar Virdi was out in the following over without scoring before some clean hitting from Nathan Barnwell pushed Surrey over 150. Yousef Majid held up an end before being bowled for three, having lasted 30 deliveries; Barnwell the not out batter for 28* with Surrey finishing on 153, still 126 runs behind Hampshire.

Surrey needed a special bowling performance to get themselves back into the game and Taylor and Barnwell delivered an outstanding new ball spell. First, Taylor pinned Holland lbw for just one before Barnwell struck in the next over, removing Ben Brown for a solitary run having played a rash shot at a ball down the leg side.

Taylor bowled Felix Organ for nine before Eckland flicked the ball straight to Van der Merwe without scoring leaving Hampshire four down inside the first 10 overs. Taylor had Mumford caught by Ryan Patel at second slip for nought and then he bowled opener La Fontaine-Johnson for eight. Hampshire were 29/6 and Taylor had astonishing figures of 4/4 off his seven overs with the new ball.

However, Hampshire rallied and Kelly and Abbas put on 93 runs before Amar Virdi removed Abbas (50) caught by Patel at slip having top-edged an attempted pull stroke. The Hampshire tail continued to offer resistance and it took an absolute beauty from Majid to remove the number nine Fairfax-Ross (26), bowled through the gate attempting an expansive drive.

Number 10, Jack launched a pair of mighty sixes before being trapped lbw to Virdi and Hants ended the day 209/9 with Kelly 78*. They will resume in the morning 332 runs ahead of Surrey.
