Surrey have signed South African A all-rounder Tiaan van Vuuren and Queensland bowler Benji Floros for the Metro Bank One Day Cup.
Van Vuuren, who bowls left-arm pace and bats right-handed, has represented South Africa A as well as MI Cape Town and Pretoria Capitals in SA20. In May this summer, the all-rounder impressed with a match-winning performance in South Africa A’s victory over England Lions, picking up 11/105 in the first-class game at Beckenham.
In South Africa, the 24-year-old now plays for Knights, having made his domestic debut across all formats for Eastern Province. Van Vuuren has taken 83 first-class wickets in 28 matches and has a high of 120 with the bat. He also has 37 List A wickets to his name, including a best of 4/39.
Seam bowler Benji Floros will be joining van Vuuren as Surrey’s second overseas player in the One Day Cup squad.
A tall right-arm bowler from Australia, Floros has been playing league cricket for Middleton CC in the Sussex Cricket League and was available to join up with the squad after recent injuries to seamers Alex French and Seb Stuart-Reckling as well as Nathan Barnwell. He has also represented the Surrey Second XI.
Leading into the competition, French picked up a side strain during the recent England U19s match and Stuart-Reckling suffered a groin injury in the recent Second XI friendly against Hampshire, whilst Barnwell is recovering from a stress fracture.
Alongside the injuries, the additions of van Vuuren and Floros come after 17 Surrey men’s players are set to feature in The Hundred.
Alec Stewart, Director of Men’s Cricket at Surrey, said: “Tiaan is a talented all-rounder who is catching attention in South African cricket. We saw him in Beckenham earlier, and he can be a point of difference with his left-arm pace.
“Benji had been playing club cricket in Sussex, and we were able to call him up to the squad to supplement our seam attack, which has been depleted due to injuries.”
